student of the year: accepted to Harvard WNIA MARIA Throughout high school, has De Leon achieved a 4.5 GPA. She is serving as both ASB president and FFA vice president, two positions on a list of notable loador chip and community, 🦋📚🔥👏🏼👏🏿👏🏽👏🏻👏🏾Mariana De Leon - Santa Maria High School De Leon has had her sights set on Harvard since the second grade. “I knew since a long time ago that this was my path,” she said. Throughout highschool, has De Leon achieved a 4.5 GPA. She is serving as both ASB president and FFA vice president, two positions on a list of notable leadership and community service accomplishments. De Leon plans to declare a history major with a politicalscience minor during her undergraduate studies, but her ultimate goal is to be accepted to Harvard LawSchool. “Mariana on a daily basis has the commitment to succeed in and out of the classroom," Principal Joe Domingues said. "Her dedication to achieve the best is what makes her amazing.” During her time in the SantaMaria-Bonita School District, De Leon was named migrant student of the year in 2012-13. Going through the migrant education program presented challenges in her early education, De Leon said, but also gave her the tools to succeed once she was reclassified as English-fluent. De Leon moved to the U.S. just after she turned 1. De Leon attributes her ongoing success not only to her internal “fire” but, also, to the support system of people who rally around her. At the top of her list is her mother. “My mom has gone along with all my dreams,” De Leon said. “(Acceptance to Harvard is) validation not only for me but for her. They've never told me I can't do this." As she waits for word on her scholarship applications, De Leon said she’ll continue to do what it takes to make a Harvard education possible for herself. She will make the move to Cambridge in early August. “I’m committed, and I’m going to make it work," she said. "I’m going to do whatever it takes to succeed at Harvard.
