The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:
And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:
It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting: 
So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:

The first training of Zuko we see, Iroh shoots a fireball right into Zuko’s face - while Zuko just stands there unflinching. It’s the very first episode, and Zuko & Iroh are the obvious villains, and it just seems like some macho bs they do.  And then comes the duel with Zhao, and Zuko is down, but when he sees that flaming fist to his face, something lets loose inside him that helps him turn the fight around…But it’s not until we learn Zuko’s backstory that all this gets a whole new meaning. 
Why would Zuko still be on basics if not because he suffered a huge setback after his agni kai? Imagine how much hard work, patience it was to build Zuko back up again, so he would not freeze in blind panic (or curl up in a ball) when fire gets close to his face. I think Iroh practiced this with him all the time until he could stand there unflinching (knowing that Iroh is in full control of his bending and trusting that his uncle would never hurt him). And when it came to the duel with Zhao, Zuko could react in a RL situation instead of freezing up, and turn all the negative feelings (rage, anger, pain, whatever) into fuel to win the fight against a bender who is much more skilled than he is. 
And Iroh obviously drilled him with control and restraint, because no matter how much he lets his rage loose, he has enough control not to hurt Zhao and enough self-restraint not to burn him at the end. I definitely think it was a deliberate choice on Iroh’s part to hold back on teaching offensive forms to Zuko beyond the basics (knowing that combining those with his unprocessed anger could result in him being out of control and hurt people). Instead, it seems he concentrated on teaching him defensive forms, fire breath, heat control, and so on…


What the FUCK iroh was the real mvp of this whole show my god

Indeed. It goes over many people’s head, but he made a huge difference. It was mostly assists and defensive plays though, not the flashy stuff.

 Back when they were young and poor they had to share a single person bed for
 six months. As Pegg put it, they started out sleeping head to feet, but after
 kicking each other in the face one too many times they started sleeping head to
 head. It wasn't long after that that they gave up on being macho "no touchy
 dudes and just snuggled up during bedtime. In the morning they "couldn't tell
 where one began and the other ended
 That's why they're so cuddly today. They're so physically close that it worried
 Frost's fiance at the time and she asked them to never share a bed again after
 she got married to Frost. The night before the wedding Frost wasn't allowed to
 see her anyway, so Pegg dropped by his house so they could share a bed one
 last time (Frost since got a divorce though). Pegg's wife has no objections to any
 of this. If it's important to her hubby, who is she to judge.
 Pegg recommend all male friends to try sharing a bed. If it turns out you want to
 fuck each other, great, you're going to have a lot of fun. If you don't want to fuck
 each other, well, then nothing happens anyway.
 (Side note: That's also why there's so many photos of Edgar Wright cuddling up

 It has come to my attention that most people don't know this about Simon Pegg
 and Nick Frost and that's a goddamn crime against humanity.
 Back when they were young and poor they had to share a single person bed for
 six months. As Pegg put it, they started out sleeping head to feet, but after
 kicking each other in the face one too many times they started sleeping head to
 head. It wasn't long after that that they gave up on being macho "no touchy
 dudes and just snuggled up during bedtime. In the morning they "couldn't tell
 where one began and the other ended
 That's why they're so cuddly today. They're so physically close that it worried
 Frost's fiance at the time and she asked them to never share a bed again after
 she got married to Frost. The night before the wedding Frost wasn't allowed to
 see her anyway, so Pegg dropped by his house so they could share a bed one
 last time (Frost since got a divorce though). Pegg's wife has no objections to any
 of this. If it's important to her hubby, who is she to judge.

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:
The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:
And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:
It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting: 
So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:
But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!
