The first training of Zuko we see, Iroh shoots a fireball right into Zuko’s face - while Zuko just stands there unflinching. It’s the very first episode, and Zuko & Iroh are the obvious villains, and it just seems like some macho bs they do.  And then comes the duel with Zhao, and Zuko is down, but when he sees that flaming fist to his face, something lets loose inside him that helps him turn the fight around…But it’s not until we learn Zuko’s backstory that all this gets a whole new meaning. 
Why would Zuko still be on basics if not because he suffered a huge setback after his agni kai? Imagine how much hard work, patience it was to build Zuko back up again, so he would not freeze in blind panic (or curl up in a ball) when fire gets close to his face. I think Iroh practiced this with him all the time until he could stand there unflinching (knowing that Iroh is in full control of his bending and trusting that his uncle would never hurt him). And when it came to the duel with Zhao, Zuko could react in a RL situation instead of freezing up, and turn all the negative feelings (rage, anger, pain, whatever) into fuel to win the fight against a bender who is much more skilled than he is. 
And Iroh obviously drilled him with control and restraint, because no matter how much he lets his rage loose, he has enough control not to hurt Zhao and enough self-restraint not to burn him at the end. I definitely think it was a deliberate choice on Iroh’s part to hold back on teaching offensive forms to Zuko beyond the basics (knowing that combining those with his unprocessed anger could result in him being out of control and hurt people). Instead, it seems he concentrated on teaching him defensive forms, fire breath, heat control, and so on…


What the FUCK iroh was the real mvp of this whole show my god

Indeed. It goes over many people’s head, but he made a huge difference. It was mostly assists and defensive plays though, not the flashy stuff.

 Actually this is an obvious question but it's not what you might
 think. Let me explain it to you, I've been an opiate addict for a
 long time and tried many drugs. Drugs that are 'uppers' have the
 most 'obvious' euphoria. For example if you take
 adderall/coke/meth/speed/MDMA you will get this shining bright
 euphoria, self confidence, energy, and other drug-specific feelings
 (for meth like you are king
 However, you owe these drugs back what they delivered to you.
 After a meth binge, or lots of MDMA use, or staying up all night on
 coke you will feel like shit. To an extent this aspect is similar to an
 alcoholic hangover.

 On the other hand, for many people who experiment with heroin
 they are underwhelmed (not including IV usage, but most
 experimenters rarely ever IV first time). They just feel good, chill,
 happy, but they feel like this spooky drug 'heroin' hasn't delivered
 They are just mellow. Oh obviously it has all been a lie they will
 think. Heroin isn't spooky, it's chill. It's not addictive like everyone
 else thinks. It doesn't make you do stupid shit or stay up all day
 and hallucinate like amphetamines or coke. It doesn't empty your
 serotonin like MDMA or give you a hangover like alcohol. People
 tend to just think oh, what a nice drug.
 So the next day they wake up and everything is normal. No
 headache or shitty feeling--just a slight afterglow of that nice
 feeling. Oh it was cheap as well! It only cost $10 for a whole night
 of being high! I thought people said heroin was expensive? And
 then next weekend comes... There are all these drugs I could do
 but I liked heroin. It didn't 'fuck me up,' I could still think clearly. No
 hangover. No feeling like shit later. I still was awake. It just made
 me happy and content with life. Oh and it's only $10! Well, I
 should get some more for the whole weekend. This is great! I will
 use Heroin on the weekends now!

 Now let's say this person works and has responsibilities. He
 knows he can't go into work drunk, or on MDMA, or high. So he
 doesn't. It's actually simple. But heroin... Well the user might
 actually find they do better work on heroin. Instead of being sad
 or grumpy or depressed with his jo... he is just... happy. Mellow.
 Content. Everything is fine and the world is beautiful. It's raining,
 it's dark, I woke up at 5:30AM, I'm commuting in traffic. I would
 have had a headache, I would have been miserable, I would have
 wondered how my life took me to this point. This point I'm at right
 now. But no, no, everything is fine. Life is beautiful. The rain drops
 are just falling and in each one I see the reflection of every
 persons life around me. Humanity is beautiful. In this still frame
 shot of traffic on this crowded bus I just found love and peace
 Heroin is a wonder drug. Heroin is better than everything else.
 Heroin makes me who I wish I was. Heroin makes life worth
 living. Heroin is better than everything else. Heroin builds up a
 tolerance fast. Heroin starts to cost more money. I need heroin to
 feel normal. I don't love anymore. Now I'm sick. I can't afford the

 half-truths to this drug that will show you the world and for a

 well now. Luckily I was able to pull up and get help right before I
 entered the deadly downward spiral. Some of my friends have not

 night meditation and sleep, Anakin just got restless. The lure of
 the streets called him. There were projects he had to complete,
 droids he was building or refining, parts to scavenge, rusty
 treasures to uncover. But mostly he just needed to be outside,

 Shout out to people like me who have parents who are loving but are black holes
 of emotional labor... It took me a long time to realize that it's okay to have mixed
 feelings about your parents, about your relationship with them
 Sometimes parents can love you but be somewhat toxic to you and your growth
 and that's a very hard realization to come to if you, like me, grew up extremely
 close to them
 Sometimes parents can love you genuinely but lack emotional maturity, forcing
 you to perform disproportionate amounts of emotional labor. Some parents
 manifest symptoms of their mental illness in ways that are toxic to your mental
 illness
 Some parents, like mine, try so hard to be good parents but fall back on habits of
 emotional manipulation because they haven't processed their own traumas and
 are modeling behavior they grew up with. That doesn't make their behavior
 acceptable, and it's okay to feel exhausted and hurt when they betray you. You
 don't have to forgive every mistake.
 I want you to know that it's okay to protect yourself, to need some space apart
 from them. The love you have for your parents is still valid, and you are making
 the right decision
 Placing a safe emotional distance between myself and my parents has been one
 of the most difficult, heartbreaking processes I've ever gone through. it hurts to
 try to curb the strength of your own natural empathy around people you love. It
 feels disingenuous to your heart's natural state
 But I promise you, you are not hard-hearted or ungrateful, and you are not
 abandoning them. You are making a decision about your own emotional, mental,
 and spiritual health
 I know what it's like in that confusing grey area of love mixed with guilt and
 anxiety, of exhaustion and quasi-manipulation and unreciprocated emotional
 labor, and I promise you, you are not alone.
