Her eyes, dark as the deep waters, gleam in the noon light. “are you sure?” she asks.

x

the enemy fleet surrenders after the flagship is sunk in the night, the anchor ripped off the ship and the planks torn off the hull. the surviving crew, wild-eyed and delirious, whimper and say a sea serpent came from the water and attacked them, say it was longer than the boat and crushed it in its coils. the first mate hears this and has to hide her laughter. the captain apologizes to his daughter for doubting her.

“don’t worry,” she says, with a bright laugh, “it was fun.”

x

the second time, they are pushed by a storm into a royal fleet. they can’t possibly fight them, and they don’t have the time to escape.

“let me up,” the mermaid urges, surfacing starboard and shouting to the crew. “bring me up, quickly, quickly.”

they lower the boat and she piles her sinous form into it, and uses her claws to help the crew pull her up. once on the deck she flops out of the boat and makes her way over to the bow. the crew tries to help but she’s so heavy they can barely lift parts of her.

she crawls up out in front of the rail and wraps her long webbed tail around the prow. the figurehead has served them well so far but they need more right now. she wraps herself around the figurehead and raises her body up into the wind takes a breath of the stinging salt air and sings.

the storm carries her voice on its front to the royal navy. they are enchanted, so stunned by her song that they drop the rigging ropes and let the tillers drift. the pirates sail through the center of the fleet, trailing the storm behind them, and by the time the fleet has managed to regain its senses they are buried in wind and rain and the pirates are gone.

x

she declines guns. instead she carries a harpoon and its launcher, and uses them to board enemy ships, hauling her massive form out of the water to coil on the deck and dispatch enemies with ruthless efficiency. her family is feared across all the sea.

x

“you know we are dying,” the captain says, looking down at her.

she floats next to the ship, so massive she could hold it in her arms. her eyes are wise.

“i know,” she says, “i can feel it coming.”

the first mate stands next to the captain. she never had a lover or a child, and neither did he, but to the mermaid they are her parents. she will always love her daughter. the tattoos are graven in dark swirls across the mermaid’s deep brown skin and the flesh of her tail, even spiraling onto the spiked webbing on her spine and face. her hair is still tied back, this time with a sail that could not be patched one last time.

“we love you,” the first mate says simply, looking down. her own tightly coiled black hair falls in to her face; she shakes the locs out of the way and smiles through her tears. the captain pretends he isnt crying either.

“i love you too,” the mermaid says, and reached up to pull the ship down just a bit, just to hold them one last time.

“guard the ship,” the captain says. “you always have but you know they’re lost without you.”

“without you,” the mermaid corrects, with a shrug that makes waves. “what will we do?”

“i don’t know,” the captain says. “but you’ll help them, won’t you?”

“of course i will,” she scoffs, rolling her eyes. “i will always protect my family.”

x

the captain and the first mate are gone. the ship has a new captain, young and fearless - of the things she can afford to disregard. she fears and loves the ocean, as all captains do. she does not fear the royal fleet. and she does not fear the mermaid.

“you know, i heard stories about you when i was a little girl,” she says, trailing her fingers in the water next to the dock.

the mermaid stares at her with one eye the size of a dinner table. “is that so?” she hums, smirking with teeth sharper than the swords of the entire navy.

“they said you could sink an entire fleet and that you had skin tougher than dragon scales,” the new captain says, grinning right back at the monster who could eat her without a moment’s hesitation. “i always thought they were telling tall tales.”

“and now?”

“they were right,” the new captain says. “how did they ever befriend you?”

the mermaid smiles, fully this time, her dark eyes gleaming under the white linen sail. “they didn’t know any better.”

Yooooo

Af, Being Alone, and Ass: When you land at pleasant park and ya house aint got no guns and you already hear rockets and gunshots going off outside Fortnite done changed my life. I lost all hope for online gaming and a welcoming gaming community since Mw2. I was lost, alone, and had no squad. All my friends were dead and I felt the pain Lil Uzi was trying to portray in his music. I’m not gonna lie, I was not on the fortnite wave at first until i actually played it when I went over to my little cousin house. This is probably one of the most addicting games. More addicting then crack. They had to have sprinkle some crack into the servers. The first time I picked up a controller I was like “why the fuck is their the magic school bus dropping us off?” Then I see hella people sky diving out. Im like we about to mob on niggas, till i released how ruthless people online are. I use to just skydive as soon as the bus crossed over the map. I would be lumber jacking wood until some ruthless ass mother fucker pulls up with a Gold Scar, Maxed out shield and his homie quick scoping me from 90 meters out in a 5 story apartment complex. I have no chance with this cute little pix axe. I played squad mode with some random. I will never forget you Zelda Girl. She looked like she knew what she was doing so i followed her. Zelda Girl was thiccc af in her camo cargos working that axe for that wood. I seen shorty get sniped by a call of duty try hard from about 200 meters away. how a bitch from Tilted towers pop her from greasy grove? I went over to revive her and gave her my last Med Kid and Shield Juice. That Shield Lean comes in clutch down the stretch when fuck niqqas try to team up on you. I end up finishing the two enemies and I go over to salvage their materials. Just in the nick of Time the storm starts closing in on me. Trying to run from the storm is like dodging child support, you can’t. Once trap by the system it’s over for you. My health on about 14 when I look over to Zelda girl bonk ganging my ass. Storm closing in the bitch pulls out a launch pad and leaves my ass. These hoes not loyal. I died in the storm. Zelda girl if you reading this... bitch I miss you baby come back. I won’t die in the storm no more. I hate to see you go but I love to watch that ass leave 😘

And guess who doesn’t have enough money to support their programs? The fine arts programs. I had friends who were in choir, band, etc. that had to find ways to raise money for their programs since the school never cared to fund them. It’s either that, or the teachers pull money off of their paycheck to provide supplies for their students (and public school teachers don’t have good salaries anyways in the US), whereas the school uses all their state funds for the football team. It’s ridiculous, and I’m glad I’m no longer in high school having to deal with a school who worships their football team, while all the other programs suffer to remain in the school.

I haven’t been in highschool in 7 years but my brother is currently in highschool. Apparently the school is in much worse condition than when I left, with some classes having lessons outside because the a/c was busted and the school refused to fix it. Programs related to art are royally screwed and have to raise their own money or find their own supplies. We had to go DUMPSTER DIVING for art supplies. In Pom (dance team) we had to raise our own money for a Disney trip despite Disney having invited us to perform after we had won multiple state championships. Same happened to the cheer team the following year after I graduated. Performing arts often has to make their own sets from whatever scrap gets donated or gets found by teachers/students. We had to raise all kinds of money and were forced to reduce prices of tickets for performances because “people shouldn’t have to pay that much for a show” by the school (our shows were $10). Band is still in the same shitty facility as it was when I was there with shitty acoustics and shittier uniforms. But you can bet your ass the football team got all kinds of goodies. Like new equipment, new uniforms, new gym equipment and A FUCKING INDOOR FOOTBALL FIELD! Our team sucked when I was in highschool and they still suck now. The school is letting teachers go due to budget cuts but they’re STILL hiring a new coach just because the last one (who had only been there a year) didn’t win a championship (which football hasn’t won a championship in almost 30 years). Coaches get paid more than regular teachers even if they don’t teach a subject aside from football. They also often bully other teachers into boosting a students’ grade just so they won’t be ineligible to play an upcoming game. This is why I hate highschool football. In America it’s seen as a religion. Football takes priority before EVERYTHING even though hardly any students have a career in football after highschool or college. Even though most scholarships are based on academics and OTHER extra curricular activities. But fuck that, the football team gets all the money. Fuck football.

Infographic: Is Your State’s Highest-Paid Employee A Coach? In fact the departments that got the most funding were the arts, theater especially. I guess it’s just a school full of nerds? I mean our best varsity team was always robotics if that tells you anything… Honestly though the problem isn’t how much money the school’s being given usually, it’s how that money’s being spent. If all your money’s going towards sports while the rest of the school is falling apart, there’s a problem.

At the school where I teach we are always running out of things.

My school was the same as all this shit. Not enough books to go around, not enough teachers, no enough caregivers for the mentally handicapped, but hey, we got a new half million dollar track and field for no fucking reason.

I’m still surprised by this, because I believed it was normal to spend 300€ each year in textbooks, and high school is even more expensive, maybe 400€. (I live in Southern Europe).

How it works? The textbooks are school property?

Yeah textbooks are paid for and provided by the school

See my school was always the opposite of this… Well funded in pretty much every area except sports lol.

Once we ran out of paper towels and we were out for like half a month.
