Also, players are able to negotiate contract lengths, this is super important to giving players more power since we don’t have a union yet and after finding out about the Mayhem players’ contracts+salary vs contenders players (long story short they’re rumored to be payed less than their contenders roster who are apparently the inactive spitfire players because they’re locked for potentially 2 yrs) it shows there’s some poor management going on. Free agency could be spicy too depending on how many people get cut after their inaugural season performance. As much as I hate to admit it there’s obviously some players that have fallen off, but some still have the potential and under a new team with capable players I think we can see some make a comeback. As many have said, these players are OWL caliber in terms of mechanics but it’s about the teamplay and whether their style works well. 2 Way players is another thing I’m eye’ing because letting people who are OWL level play in contenders (or vice versa) could throw some big curveballs in terms of strategies. I’m also wondering if it’s going to be used often, maybe as a way to get those benched players still playing competitive matches once in awhile.

People love, love, love framing science in condescending and silly sounding terms as an excuse to cut funding to vital programs. *Especially* if it’s also associated with something (gasp) ‘inappropriate’, like sex or ladyparts. This is why research for a lot of women’s issues, lgbtq+ issues, minorities’ issues, and vulnerable groups in general’s issues tends to lag so far behind the times. This is why some groups are pushing so hard to cut funding for climate change research these days. Anything that’s acquired governmental funding has been through an intensely competitive, months-to-years long screening by EXPERTS IN THE FIELD who have a very good idea what research is likely to be most beneficial to that field and fill a needed gap. Trust me.  The paperwork haunts my nightmares. So, we had a joke in my lab: “Nice work, college boy.” It was the phrase for any project that you could spend years and years working on and end up with results that could be summed up on a single, pretty slide with an apparently obvious graph. The phrase was taken from something a grower said at a talk my advisor gave as a graduate student: “So you proved that plants grow better when they’re watered? Nice work, college boy.” But like, the thing is? There’s always more details than that. And a lot of times it’s important that somebody questions our assumptions.  A labmate of mine doing very similar research demonstrated that our assumptions about the effect of water stress on plant fitness have been wrong for years because *nobody had thought to separate out the different WAYS a plant can be water stressed.* (Continuously, in bursts, etc.). And it turns out these ways have *drastically different effects* with drastically different measures required for response to them to keep from losing lots of money and resources in agriculture. Nice work, college boy. :p Point the second: surprise! Anna Haldewang is an industrial design student.  She developed this in her product design class.  And, as far as I can tell, she has had no particular funding at all for this project, much less billions of dollars.  ‘grats, Anna, you FUCKING ROCK. ps: On a lighter note, summarizing research to make it sound stupid is both easy AND fun. Check out @lolmythesis – I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. :33 Okay, so I actually know Anna. She is my classmate and my friend, and I know this project quite well. And I could not have put the above statement any better. Here’s the thing guys, bumblebees are endangered, but they have a very important roll in our ecosystem. While we are doing everything we can to stabalize the bee populations, we also have to make sure that an important job is being done in our ecosystem. This drone was a conceptual way to aid that as we work to stabalize bee populations. I have never been so mad at Tumblr before. This is a huge accomplishment for a student, let alone a female in our male dominated industry. Stop shitting on everything, it doesn’t make you cool. Oh and actually read into things before you go tearing them apart.

my god but I get mad when someone flippantly dismisses important scientific progress because you can make it sound dumb by framing it the right way.
For a start, of course a lot of science sounds dumb.  Science is all in the slogging through the minutiae, the failures, the tedious process of filling in the blank spaces on the map because it ain’t ’t glamorous, but if someone doesn’t do it, no one gets to know for sure what’s there.

But let’s talk about why we should care about this particular science and spend money on it. (And I’ll even answer without even glancing at the article.)
Off the top of my head?
-advances in robotics
-advances in miniature robotics
-advances in flight technology
-advantages in simulating and understanding the mechanics and programming of small intelligences
-ability to grow crops in places uninhabitable by insects (space? cold/hot? places where honeybees are non-native and detrimental to the ecosystem?)
-ability to improve productivity density of crops and feed more people
-less strain on bees, who do poorly when forced to pollinate monocultures of low nutrition plants
-ability to run tightly controlled experiments on pollination, on the effects of bees on plant physiology, on ecosystem dynamics, etc
-fucking robot bees, my friend
-hahaha think how confused those flowers must be
Also worth keeping in mind?

Nice work, college boy.”
But like, the thing is? There’s always more details than that. And a lot of times it’s important that somebody questions our assumptions.
A labmate of mine doing very similar research demonstrated that our assumptions about the effect of water stress on plant fitness have been wrong for years because *nobody had thought to separate out the different WAYS a plant can be water stressed.* (Continuously, in bursts, etc.). And it turns out these ways have *drastically different effects* with drastically different measures required for response to them to keep from losing lots of money and resources in agriculture.
Nice work, college boy. :p

Point the second: surprise!

Okay, so I actually know Anna.

 Let Me Talk About Werewolves
 for a Second
Why is it that every werewolf book is this weird testosterone fueled alpha
 male/female romance thing?
Like guys. Werewolves are family groups. They are basically big ol dog families
Your werewolf family wouldn't be made up of alpha males fighting each other for
 dominance and subjugating females
If there was a werewolf in your neighborhood, they'd be that family of 10 kids
always roughhousing outside and their house is the one all the neighborhood
kids go to hang out at because Mr. Werewolf and Mrs. Werewolf are the Cool
Parents that their kids find really embarrassing

Wait...Emily? Aren't she and her whole family...you know?
"Don't believe everything you've heard, worst thing that's ever happened over
there is the twins teething on visitors' shoes."

 Here's the thing, though
While the notion of the "alpha wolf" is indeed misguided, being based on
observations of wolves in captivity, the dominance thing does happen. And it's
not just the adult males, adult females do it too - but it's only a thing when
wolves who aren't related by blood end up sharing a habitat.
So consider: by some happenstance, two unrelated werewolf families end up
living across the street from one another. Of course they're not going to stat
brawling in the streets - they're civilised people, after all - but that urge to show
the other pack who's boss comes out in other ways, resulting in the two clans
getting, like, weirdly competitive about everything
 Imagine the Hallowe'en displays
 avatar-dacia
"Wow...the Phelans and Ochoas both really went all-out with the decorations
 Are those real bones?"
That's just how they are, they'll find absolutely any excuse to showboat at each
other like that. And they're definitely real-right down to the toothmarks

Something to think about though: Do you know what would be for all intents and
purposes the *EXACT CIRCUMSTANCE* where wolves are shown to display
the classic Alpha/Beta dominance behavior? ie A bunch of unrelated (usually
unmated') young adults forced into close proximity in competition for unnaturally
distributed resources? Where their actions are being observed and controlled by
impartial" and ignorant authorities? Where they are forced to be at crowded
events when their "cycles" are flaring up?
 SCHOOL
Regular public school, college, even and especially boarding school meet all the
criteria to force young, undeveloped werewolves into an intensely unhealthy
 situation
Of course the parents would know this, they would take steps to ensure their
 children were not stressed out.
 Conclusions: Werewolves are homeschoolers
That big, rowdy family whose science projects make the local news, who only
shows up at school to ace the standardized testing once a year, who spends
weeks at a time out on family hunting trips, whose innumerable uncles and
aunts are always dropping in with food. Those are the werewolves
